Debunking the "Big Lie" As To the Best Way to Mow a Lawn

Many of us covet our very own swath of thick, pampered, deep green grass, don't we? So I can understand you looking for the best way to mow a lawn to get that. So you can have a lawn that makes the neighbors green with envy?

Fair enough. But I'll bet you didn't know you can easily have a great looking lawn, with less work, if you can just forget one thing. I call it the Big Lie about how to mow your lawn that's firmly entrenched in the thinking of homeowners across the country.

Alright already! So what's the tip about best way to mow a lawn that most cheerfully ignore? It's to forego bagging the clippings. Anyone looking for lawn excellent-ness will carefully heed this rule.

And yes, I know there are any number of reasons given as to why bagging clippings is part and parcel of the perfect way to mow a lawn. But trust me. They're all myths. In fact let me dispel three common ones right now.

The first myth is the clippings will ruin the coveted lush, emerald green appearance you crave. Not true. If you cut when you should with a mower blade that's sharp you'll get a clean cut. Any clippings that result will be so small as to be invisible.

The next myth says leaving clippings behind causes thatch buildup. Again not true. Thatch is basically the accumulation of dead grass stems, roots and shoots - not clippings. Clippings are like 80% water. They dry out and break down quickly. Recycling nitrogen and adding organic matter back to the soil in the process.

The third myth is you're giving weeds a chance if you don't bag clippings. Not if you cut often enough so you're only removing no more than a third of the grass blade it won't. In fact, if you mow often enough you'll encourage your lawn to thicken up rather than be all thin and spindly. And thin grass is what really gives weeds an opening.

Plus if you don't mow often enough you give any weeds there time to go to seed.

Of course as with any rule there is an exception. One exception to the "No Bagging the Clippings" rule would be when you have to cut grass that is wet. For instance if you're going on vacation but need to mow the lawn one last time and it's raining. In that situation it's best to bag the clippings to avoid clumps.

In any case, now you can't say you don't know how to mow your lawn. Besides being the best way to mow a lawn this is a simplest way since if you don't bag clippings you'll get done mowing that much sooner. And you won't have clippings to handle so they can be carted off to the land fill or recycling center. It's all quite liberating.

Are you in the market for a new lawn mower? If so, you probably realize that there are many manufacturers out there producing excellent machines. This is both good and bad.

Regardless of the quality of the mower you purchase, you'll have to do maintenance and repair. It's the nature of machinery to wear out. Common trouble spots are belts, blades, and motors.

Don't worry about the mulching deck, it rarely wears out. The engine, though, is another matter. You want to protect the engine because it is expensive to replace. Keep it well oiled, and don't let the mower sit with gasoline in the tank for too terribly long.

Barefoot running although, gaining some ground, is like hard core bodybuilding. People are not yet ready to embrace the idea of shoe-less athletes running around.
